MY MISSION is to use natural wool from local farmers who graze their sheep within a 10 mile radius of my home. There are thousands of sheep around here, so there are thousands of pounds of sheep fleece all making their way off the the Welsh Wool board every year for very little money. Sadly for a long time now, farmers have NOT been paid a fair price for their fleece & they don’t even cover their costs of keeping & shearing the sheep. Their wool is not really classed as usable wool for anything other than carpets & only classed as a by-product… The main market for their wool appears to be China when really the wool could be better used to make lovely products right here in our own country. The wool is definitely a lot more usable then it is given credit for & could be made into lovely clothes or rugs etc. Its certainly isn’t rubbish & should be valued & paid a far higher price than it is currently valued at. Farmers are being cheated out of a very worthwhile income or even left out of pocket.
I want to do my part to change that & pay them a fair price for this beautiful fibre
All my products are made sustainably whether its the slate buttons which are hand-picked from the banks of the river Dyfi & local beach…Or the wool in our loom kits which is spun from the local sheep that graze the hills around my home.
My weaving looms are made from recycled wood (where possible) or sustainable timber. They are made by myself & my dad in his small workshop not far from my home.
All the natural dyed yarns are dyed using local plants from down the lane or my garden & if I use acid dyes I will make sure that every drop dye is exhausted before throwing away the water.
My handspun yarns will be spun using my Ashford wheels. I do try to use as much of the fleece as possible & any waste goes into my compost bin or around my plants. Nothing is wasted .
I want to do my bit to help my local farmers, our environment & provide you with handcrafted items to enjoy.
I will regularly be posting photographs of handmade yarns & gifts …All these items will be available for sale in my Etsy shop, through my website and through Ebay which will be updated every 2 weeks. So I’m sure you’ll find something you love…
Every blessing to you Hazel…xxx
